Saturday, 18 September 2010

There has been heavy rain overnight. The flow below Poutu Intake was about 95 cumecs at 7:00am. The flow should come down during the day, but there is some more rainfall forecast.

Please assess the conditions yourself before getting on the river.

There is some decent rain forecast over the next few days. The current flows are perfect for the releases, but more heavy rainfall could mean flood conditions during the releases. We will keep you posted here with updates.

Also, Lake Taupo is very full and Genesis Energy have been asked by Environment Waikato to turn out the foreign water (Moawhango Tunnel and the Western Diversion). Depending on the weather this could last for several days or several weeks. This means that the Whakapapa river is now under natural flow conditions and will remain this way until EW instruct Genesis Energy to turn the foreign water back into the scheme. This might be an opportunity for some keen kayakers to enjoy higher flows. Keep an eye on the Genesis Energy website for rainfall and flows in the Tongariro Scheme.

Be careful out there—these rivers (especially the Whakapapa River) can rise very quickly.
