Logging on Waihohonu
Last saturday a group got together to chop out some of the logs from Waihohonu that came down in spring last year. Craig, Liam, Boyd, Shannon and Campbell were there. We managed to make most of the river runnable. There is a portage on the second rapid below the road bridge. We spent a lot of time getting real bad trees out of a few place and there is now able to get through some that were not even runable.
The river still needs to be taken with care there is still heaps of trees and wood in the river and they can all move at any time so make sure you keep your eyes open. Get out there give it a go and let us know what you think.

hey sorry i forgot but have dropped it off now
Sure thing thats nice & close i'll will be heading in tomorrow arvo.
Hi Mel,
That was actually my biner that the last person in my group didn't retrieve. If convenient, could you please drop it off in letter box at 9 Nairn Crescent Palmerston North.
Thanks,
Boyd
Thanks guys for all the work clearing out the logs. I was also on the trip with the Wellington guys & girls. The big logs remain & will definately be hard to get rid off but hopefuly over time we'll be able to clear it.
I accidently took the carabinear off the rope from the portage as I was told it was one from our group, but it wasn't. Just letting people know that the rope is still there minus the carabinear, i'll replace when able.
Extreme care on running this river at the moment & keep an eye out for logs. If unsure scout & look
Hi keen Waihohonu paddlers, I believe we ran it just before Alans group (the big crew from Wellington?) on Sunday.
It was the same as it was immediately after we did the logging.
If you are a gnarly paddler you would need 1 portage at start of run. As stated earlier "Be careful as in 1 or 2 places the rapids are marginal".
Sometimes we do it with two portages. Yesterday with some new grade 3 paddlers we made 3 portages.
Would be great if we could get more logs out, but it takes time and energy - and those that remain are perhaps the most difficult to actually remove safely. :)
sorry to tell you but as of 6 June 2010 there are still at least 3 river wide log jams which are portages unless it was in big flood. The one at the old car body is runnable on hard right that is for sure. But the river still needs more work. But thanks for doing what you did.
Liam and I had another fun run down. We pulled a small log out to clean up one of the lines on one of the rapids. All rapids are runnable after the 2nd rapid down from put in gorge (where you must portage river left as their is a log running river wide.
Be careful as in 1 or 2 places the rapids are marginal.
You should go back in and do clear out the upper run too mate! Haha. Good work bro!
Awesome work guys!
