Hello new to this and hope some one cn shed some light on this for me.I've almost finished building a 5.5 mtr canoe and would like to paddle the wimak with my two oldest sons.camping overnight .Is this possible or are there other better or safer options.Basiclly want to enjoy the outdoors in canoe that we built together.

Thanks Hugh for the reply canoe finished today and the first day we've had any rain for months.A friend has a place on lake elsemere so may take maiden voyage there next weekend.Have done a lot of tramping so well equiped for overnight trips.
I live in Darfield do you think we can put in somewhere above the gorge bridge and paddle down or is there a lot of rapids to contend to.
Any information much appreciated.
Hi
Have few runs on the Avon, then the Waimakariri near the SH 1 bridge. Get some confidence and some skills and fitness.
Keep away from willows.
Best to go with other paddlers in kayaks, rafts or canoes.
Pick a flow that is somewhere between 80 and 120 cumecs on the Ecan flow charts.
Go in good weather, never NW and not a big easterly.
Take all the gear you would take on an overnight camping trip.
Think about renting a Mountain Radio from the Mountain Radio Service (go to Ballingers Hunting and Fishing on Montreal St Chch.)
Good luck.
Hugh
