This section can be split in two or done as one depending on the level of challenge required. If you put in at the Papuni (upper) take out then you get an hour or so of road side class III down to Puhoro Bridge and from there to Erepiti Bridge it is class II - III.

To get to the take out: Head west from the town of Wairoa towards Waikaremoana on SH38 until you get to Frasertown. Turn right and continue until you get to the Ruakituri Valley Rd and Te Reinga Falls. Continue up the Ruakituri Valley Rd to the Papuni Rd turnoff (just before the golf course). Turn into Papuni Rd and after a short while a farm road on the left will take you down to a bridge at Puhoro.

To get to the put ins: Continue up the valley until you cross a ford and come to Papuni Station
