This section can be split in two or done as one depending on the level of challenge required. If you put in at the Papuni (upper) take out then you get an hour or so of road side class III down to Puhoro and from there to Erepiti Bridge it is class II - III.

To get to the take out: Head west from the town of Wairoa towards Waikaremoana on SHY38 until you get to Frasertown. Turn right and continue until you get to the Ruakituri Valley Rd and Te Reinga Falls. Continue up the Ruakituri Valley Rd to a bridge across the river at Erepiti (just past the golf course and the Papuni Rd turnoff). This is the take out.

To get to the put-in: head back to the Papuni Rd turnoff and turn into Papuni Rd. After a short while a farm road on the left will take you down to a bridge at Puhoro.
