The Mangaotaki River has it’s headwaters in the Wharerino ranges west of Piopio. It flows through farmland below towering limestone cliffs.

The most common run is to put in at the Mangaotaki road bridge and paddle down to the picnic area on the main highway between Piopio and New Plymouth. This trip is mostly class II+.

To get to this put-in. From Piopio turn up the Waitanguru Falls road and follow it until you get to the Mangaotaki Bridge.

To get to the take out. Return to Piopio and turn towards New Plymouth and find the picnic area just where the highway joins the river.

There is another trip from the picnic area to the bridge over the Mokau River. This is a class III trip or III - IV in flood conditions. A bush lined river with stunning limestone formations keeps the interest up and provides something a little different.

One more fall is just around the corner then when the river drops away amongst a large boulder jam you have the option of taking out.
