Class:
II
Put in:
Blue Pool
Take out:
State Highway One bridge, Turangi

This section is controlled by the Tongariro power Scheme and is normally shallow in sections, but is still an enjoyable paddle. It is more suitable for beginners when there is more water (with heavy rain or during the Poutu release days). The river is wider and with less gradient than the upstream sections, and despite being close to the road, is scenic with plenty of bush and views of Mt Pihanga.

It's a good idea to paddle in the middle of the day because this is a very popular section for anglers, who use it heavily in the morning and evening. Be courteous to other river users and paddle on the opposite bank from anglers when possible.

To get to the put in: find the Poutu Stream bridge on SH1 about 7km from Turangi. On the southern side of the bridge is a turnoff. Drive 2.3km of gravel to the roadend and carpark at Blue Pool.

To get to the take out: Park on the northern side of the State Highway One bridge in Turangi.

Great paddle after a bit of rain the better part is the red hut rapid just before the bridge there can sometimes be a couple of play holes and even a wave. But like Mike said it's a bit of a learner river. Very bony in some places.
