Whakatiki River - Notice from Greater Wellington Regional Council

"Logging will commence above the Whakatiki River in preparation for extraction work on Monday 3rd of September. The risk to kayakers will be the potential for trees to leave the hill side and end up down in the river. In addition, wire ropes will be suspended across Whakatiki River until October 5th.

The wire ropes will be a hazard to all recreational users and at times the ropes will come under extreme tension."

There is signage in place at the end of Bulls Run road to alert kayakers to the hazard and Greater Wellington advise that the river is effectively closed for this 4 week period. We can also report that GW have extracted the fallen pine tree in the small stream used as the get-in (Wainui Stream) but please treat this as being in place until kayakers have verified that the hazard has been removed in it's entirety.
