The spring floods in the motu catchment have made a few changes. Firstly the road to the get in has been washed away and is impassable except for tractors,a little more than 2 km past Waitangirua station which makes the trip a little longer and bonier at low flows, some thing to be wary of if you intend to get through the first gorge on your first day. Other than that the river remains little changed although all vegetation and soil has been stripped up to about 10 m above the river in places. Some old wood that has been blocking the route in the first gorge has gone and some new timber is lodged in the lower gorge rapids, some of this being quite dangerous , so as always, carefully inspect the drops and rapids in this river. The large slip that all but blocked the river last summer has all but disappeared. Must have been some Flood !!
