young river natural dam still there?

young river, mt aspiring national park (makarora area near lake wanaka)

is the lake that formed by the massive landslide still there? or has the river busted through? any info would be great.it was on the news when it happened but i have not hear anything since. thanks

Admittingly not the most recent beta but the lake was still very much there when I paddled it in late Feb. That was 6months? after the slip got there so I suspect it's still hanging in there, slowly releasing water. haven't seen any media coverage on it since and doc website says the valley remains closed as of yet.

However, we hadn't had rain for several days - the flow was running clean and not overly high, yet every drop was clean with plenty water going over it. So I wonder, since the run needs a decent amount of recent rain?, how the formation of the lake might have altered its flow ie. perhaps a more continious release of plenty water from the lake in the north branch making the run possible more often and perhaps without rain? I'd be interested to hear more opinions on this...
