A hidden gem that’s unlike any other Wairarapa river. It’s a small stream that features some impressive drops created by sandstone ledges. The run starts with several small drops. The first of the two largest falls can be seen from the road about half a kilometre from the put-in. A short distance downstream is the Mangareia Waterfall, an 11m drop that has been run successfully, but needs a lot of water and scouting of the landing at low flow. After the waterfall are 3 more drops including a slide. From there the river goes into a deeply incised gorge with difficult access. To get there: Go east from Masterton on Masterton Castlepoint Rd and turn left to Bideford after crossing the Ruamahanga River. Continue about 20km and turn left on to Mangarei Rd. The put-in is at a bridge about 3km up this road. Please contact Rachel and George Callaghan rachel.george@xtra.co.nz to obtain permission to cross their land. Please leave gates as you find them and respect their property. Their home, "Earlyhurst", is on the right just before the put-in (note - NZTopo50-BP35 has the homestead marked in a different place). To get a rough idea of how much it has rained, see the rainfall at Castlehill and Waihi http://graphs.gw.govt.nz/tauweru-at-castlehill/ http://graphs.gw.govt.nz/whangaehu-at-waihi-2/ The closest flow measurement is a long way downstream at Te Weraiti on the Tauweru River: http://graphs.gw.govt.nz/tauweru-river-at-te-weraiti/show/760
