Class: III+ mostly with one Grade IV drop at moderate flows. Grade will increase with volume
Portage?: Currently yes: scout for logs
Level: 1800 minimum, 1900-2100 moderate flow. from about 2200+ its probably more of a class IV run. Gauge is a 23 km downstream from the put in so indicative only
Gauge: Otaki at Pukehinau on www.gw.govt.nz
Length: 18 km
Gradient: 16m/km for first 9 km then flattens off
Time: 4 to 8 hours
Put in: Waitewaewae hut
Take out: Blue Slip bridge, about 2 km below Otaki Forks
Shuttle: A hard 7 hour walk in or pleasant 5 min helicopter ride. Can be tricky to get the rain/level you need and the visibly/low wind the helicopter needs.
Character: Technical pool drops in stunning wilderness surroundings, Similar in character to Hutt Gorge, perhaps a bit steeper. Flattens out to II+/III from Penn Creek
Other info: Lemming Falls (2.5 metre drop) is about 5 km from put in, definitely worth scouting with a retentive hole and plenty of rocks
the run is a gem, so close to Wellington that is rarely run due to the access challenge.
