A pleasant cruise on an ever-growing river featuring plenty of straight-shot rapids with good eddies at the bottom. The put in can be used as the take out for the upper run. The section is often used for beginner courses and club trips and can be extended by continuing to a large gravel pit a couple of kilometres past Harley’s Rock Bridge. For those after something different this stretch is suitable for K1, open boats or any other recreational floating craft. To get to the take out: SH63 runs between Kawatiri Junction and St Arnaud. About 7km east of the SH63/SH6 junction is the Harley’s Rock Bridge over the Buller River. To get to the put in: continue along SH63 for 5km to just past the Howard River Bridge and find anywhere with access to the river.
